Functions may also use STDIN/STDOUT as they wish.

I think we should clarify the meaning of "return value". Going by the formal terms of most languages, it's the value explicitly returned by the function. Many languages support pass by reference and then you can in practice return values through arguments, but this is not the language definition of a return value. Code Golf SE allows returning through parameter but I think it's a very bad idea to allow such. Partially because it takes the solutions too far from the actual language, partially because it removes the golfing challenge of printing something in as few characters as possible, which is often a big part of every challenge.
