Fish ProvenanceThis list of fishes has been taken from "List of fish common names" on Wikipedia. This list contains 1090 fishes in total.

As Wikipedia pages are prone to change over time, the list presented in this challenge is the only one that will be used for validating answers.

Input

  • There is no input for this challenge

Output

  • Exactly 255 fishes from the list, no more or less
  • The same fishes in the same order every time (your output must be deterministic)
  • The fishes must be distinct
    • You must not include herring twice
    • You may include herring, wolf-herring, and king of the herrings - fishes containing or overlapping with other fishes is not a problem
  • You may output the fishes in a data structure of your choice, such as a list, array, or vector, but each individual fish must be a string
  • If you choose to output a single string that contains the 255 fishes separated by a delimiter, the delimiter must be consistent (the same delimiter between each consecutive pair of fishes), non-alphanumeric (not a letter or digit), and must not be present in any of the fishes
    • For example, if one of your fishes is monkeyface prickleback then you must not use a space as the delimiter, and if one of your fishes is Humuhumunukunukuapua'a then you must not use an apostrophe as the delimiter
  • Each of your fishes must be exactly as it appears in the list of all fishes
    • The spelling must be identical (no regional variations - only the particular spelling shown in the list - so bicolor goat fish, not bicolour goat fish)
    • Any punctuation must be identical, including spaces, hyphens, or apostrophes

Scoring

Despite the "choose your own output" aspect of this challenge, this is a standard code golf challenge - your score is the number of bytes in your code.

Although your score is based solely on your competing code that outputs the 255 fishes, it would also be interesting to see any additional code that you might have used to help you choose which 255 fishes to work with. This is entirely optional - only your competing code is required.

Explanations in answers are optional, but I'm more likely to upvote answers that have one.

Sandbox questions

  • I'm deliberately aiming to create a challenge that is not straightforward to use with off-the-shelf string compression algorithms which many languages have built in. Any thoughts on whether this longer list to choose from and longer list to output will help with that, compared to the similar 55 fruit salad? I don't want to ban compression algorithms (even builtins), I just want a balance that favours insights specific to the data (whether used with or without compression builtins).

I would VTC this as a dupe of your existing challenge about fruits.

trichoplax‭ wrote over 1 year ago

Apart from the choice of outputs it's identical, but the same applies to Kolmogorov complexity challenges in general. That's not to say this new challenge is worth posting, but I wanted to get some feedback to see how different a challenge would need to be to be well received.

No plans to post this one any time soon as I want to let the fruits one play out first and see what I can learn from it.

I'm perfectly comfortable with this one never being posted if it's still regarded as a duplicate once there's more data on the fruits one.
